Different Thinkers Series

We created our Different Thinkers series to share the information we typically discuss with our clients with a broader audience. Each book will guide parents, caregivers, and other trusted adults as they talk to kids about their amazing brains, their profile of strengths and weaknesses, and their associated diagnosis, presenting evidence-based information at a developmentally-appropriate level. Thanks to our publisher, Boys Town Press, and our wonderful illustrator, Jennifer Ball-Cordero, for their invaluable contribution to this journey!

Different Thinkers: ADHD (Our first book)

A child-friendly guide that strips away the stigmas, myths, and misconceptions associated with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Different Thinkers: ADHD is the first book in the Different Thinkers series, designed to teach elementary-aged children about their amazing brains. This book provides children, their families, and other professionals with language to understand an ADHD diagnosis, deal with its challenges, and realize the excellent strengths and gifts associated with a different thinking brain. The book features three vignettes of children who demonstrate different presentations of ADHD, examples of strategies to support them at school and at home, and a workbook where a child can write about their own strengths, challenges, and ideas to best support their thinking and learning. It is important to empower children with knowledge about how their brains work to help them become their best self-advocates in the future.

Tina Payne Bryson, LCSW, Ph.D., New York Times Bestselling co-author of The Whole-Brain Child No-Drama Discipline, and author of The Bottom Line for Baby

Different Thinkers ADHD can help young children learn about the amazing brain and its unique learning styles, along with helping them understand the challenges and gifts of ADHD. I love the interactive portion of the book that allows children to individualize the book to their own experience. It’s a great book for parents, clinicians, teachers, and kids!”

Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D., author of Learning to Slow Down and Pay Attention: A Book for Kids about ADHD, co-author of Understanding Girls with ADHD: How They Feel and Why They Do What They Do, and founder/clinical director of the Chesapeake Center

"This is the perfect book for kids to explain what their neuropsychological testing is all about and what it means for them. I would strongly recommend that parents purchase this book if they have an elementary school aged child tested for ADHD. It's very kid-friendly and the illustrations are great!”

Different Thinkers: Autism

Coming Soon! Currently available for pre-order

A child-centered guide that explains autism and highlights the gifts of being neurodivergent.

Different Thinkers: Autism is the second book in the Different Thinkers series. This book offers an accessible and uplifting message about what it means to be autistic and what children can do to build on their strengths and manage any associated challenges. This book features three vignettes of diverse autistic children. Thought-provoking prompts support important conversations during the reading. The book explores what it means to be a different thinker, what neurodivergence means, and to find empowerment and self-acceptance.

Professor Sir Simon Baron-Cohen, FBA, FMedSci, FRSM Fellow, Trinity College, Cambridge, Director of the Autism Research Centre

“This book is a valuable and original way for autistic children to learn about their gifts and challenges. The authors have produced a beautiful book for parents and others to enjoy reading with an autistic child, to celebrate their differences.”

Dr. Melissa Nishawala, Medical Director, Autism Spectrum Disorder Service at the Child Study Center at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone

“I have been waiting for this brilliant book! The authors follow precisely the same format that I use to explain autism to children and families, namely focusing on strengths and positive attributes, as well as things that are challenging or get in the way. Questions to the reader about particular challenges are posed in a way that is likely to resonate. The explanations of what is happening in the brain are fun, engaging and designed to spark discussion. Tips and strategies to get started on making friends and understanding differences in the way the brain works will help kids, parents and caregivers to make some positive changes. No doubt, Different Thinkers: Autism is destined to become recommended reading for elementary age children, as well as young teens, and their parents.”
